Artist Viraag Desai was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, and currently works between his studios in Kolkata and Mumbai.


After graduating in 2009 with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Viraag Desai exhibited widely in the USA and India. He has participated in artist residencies throughout India, Neilson Gallery in Grazalema and Cadiz, Spain. Recently, he participated in the Uronto residency in Bangladesh. 


Viraag Desai’s group exhibitions include Wanderlust at J&K Gallery Arcadia, California (2010) Trip Tash  at Akar Prakar Gallery, 'Screenshots of Utopia' and 'Mapping Detours' at Chitrakoot Art Gallery (2013); 'The Tube Without Paint, A Fungal Lattice & The Bird That Never Flew Away' at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. 

 

He has also taken part in the CIMA Awards show in Kolkata, ‘Uday’ at Akar Prakar Art Advisory, New Delhi in 2016, followed by the ‘Affordable Art Fair’ in Hampstead. Among Viraag Desai’s other exhibitions are ‘The Painted Face’ at Gallery Art Exposure, Kolkata in 2017.


In 2019, Viraag Desai was involved in the production of the film 'Ghost of the Golden Groves' as Art Director.


He has also participated in Chitrashaala Residency at Lake Nahargarh Palace (2019), painted a mural for the Byculla Wall Project with Piramal Art Foundation as well as at Burhani College in Mumbai. 


Viraag Desai is also the recipient of two scholarships from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
