Pentamerous : Art Exposure, Kolkata

16 - 30 May 2018
‘Pentamerous’ as the name goes, is a group show of five emerging artists Arpita Akhanda, Deepak Kumar Saw, Ghanashyam Latua, Prashant Choudhury, & Ujjal Dey educated in Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan is currently based in Kolkata. Each of the five art practitioners is involved in five different methodologies to explore and express their understanding of contemporary situations. A subterranean current of a deep social consciousness has played a vital role behind the apparently seen different visual expressions of these five greenhorns.

Arpita Akhanda’s works are a series of performances, installations, and video pieces where she has used her own body as a site for exploring the fragility and strength of the human condition under the stress of our contemporary society and their conflicts. The corruption and discrepancies in contemporary society come through the semiotic route with mythological and Aesop's fables references in Deepak Kumar Saw's works. GhanashyamLatua's works are mainly based on the subject concerned with the drastic change in the rural and suburban landscape due to the rapid urbanization in our society. By temperament Prashant Choudhury's theme is Husainasque. Prasant's interest is in the lives of the working-class people; how they live their lives, entertain themselves, their taste and dreams - everything is rendered with a sharp academic skill & representational approach.

Ujjal Dey expresses his thoughts through textiles. The sense of colour abstraction in his works borrowed from abstract expressionism has been merged with the beauty of Santiniketan's landscape and expressed through the natural dye on clothes. In the end, we express our gratitude towards Art Exposure for providing us with this magnificent platform and bringing five different practices together as – Pentamerous.
