Lifestyle Asia : A Modernist Lineage of Bengali Portraiture – Presented by art exposure

Art Exposure presents the first-ever landmark exhibition dedicated to Bhunath Mukherjee, one of Bengal’s most accomplished yet understated modernist painters. Titled A Modernist Lineage of Bengali Portraiture, the show brings together 10 rare portraits spanning the 1940s to 1950s, charting Mukherjee’s journey from academic realism to a refined modernist sensibility. These paintings trace his evolving approach to oil portraiture, where naturalism, colour, and restraint intersect with an impulse to simplify and dignify the human form. Somak Mitra, Director at Art Exposure hopes to restore Bhunath Mukherjee’s rightful place in the narrative of Indian modernism by presenting these rare works in Kolkata, the city where his journey began.
