K. M. Madhusudhanan (b.1956, Alappuzha, Kerala) studied painting at Fine Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and print making at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, Gujarat.

K. M. Madhusudhanan has received numerous awards and honours for his films and artistic practice. In 2008, for ‘Bioscope’, he won a Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards in India, as well as a Special Jury Award for Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Background Score at the Kerala State Film Awards. The same film also earned him a Special Mention Jury Award at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival in Germany, Best Cinematography at SAIFF in New York, and the NETPAC Jury Award for Best Asian Film at the OSIAN Cinefan International Film Festival. In 2006, his film ‘History is a Silent Film’ was recognised as an Outstanding Film from International Festivals at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In 2001, his work Self Portrait won Best Film at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece and was again selected as an Outstanding Film from International Festivals at MoMA, New York. He has also been the recipient of two grants from the India Foundation for the Arts: in 2009 to make a film on ‘Shambarik Kharolika – Magic Lantern’, and in 2006 to make a film on ‘Venkiteswara Natya Mandali’ in Andhra Pradesh.
